Volunteer Spotlight

SCOTT FULLER:

Scott (“Scotty”) Fuller first joined up with the CYC about 2 years ago, as our official bus driver. He began by offering to drive the kids and equipment around in the big CYC converted school bus on large projects, but it didn’t take long before he was doing much more than that. Scotty soon became a regular volunteer on almost any project, whether the bus was needed or not. In fact, even after the bus was traded in for a large passenger van, Scott still offered his time and energy, coming out on projects and offering his expertise and helping hands on CYC projects. His patience with the kids and quiet personality have offered reassurance to both staff members and teens alike. That is why Scott Fuller is a volunteer we are proud to work side by side with, serving our community.

CYC Lends a hand to help feed the 2008

 Cattaraugus County

Bicentennial Wagon Train

For 2 weeks during the month of August  the county had commemorated the county’s bicentennial, this was a year long event but this two week event was county wide and highlighted was the Wagon Train that traveled all over the county letting residents see how the early settlers came to the area.

With much planning and effort the some 100 plus needed to be feed all along the way. The CYC was willing and with the newly acquired concession trailer we were able to help Beth Rose and Kim Spalti were called in and working with Brenda Andrews we had scheduled to serve lunch at the Pines NH> in Machias . Then at the last minute as we all know all the planning has a way of falling through and we were asked if we could help serve at 2 other village locations and so Beth and Kim got busy to get it done we also would like to thank the many young people that helped at the Pines location and we also had several great people that jumped in to make it all happen H.Pete Andrews towed the trailer to locations and Donna and Rick Gerlock assisted in helping at the Seneca Junction event and brought along a much needed generator since ours burned up at the Pines location. Thanks to all for pitching in and a thanks goes out to John  and the Pines staff for helping when we needed it most!

Saranac Lake

Road Trip

Saranac Lake Service Opportunity

On July 24th through 28th, certain members of the Rapid Response Team and their friends made their first ever long distance trip to work on a service project. The trip brought us to the beautiful mountains of the Adirondacks at Saranac Lake, where a local church was recruiting volunteers to overhaul some backyards for families with small children.

The CM&A church at Saranac Lake opened its rooms for us to sleep in, and the local Presbyterian church allowed us to use their showers while there. So on Thursday the 24, 2 adults, 4 teen RRT members and 4 CYC

members departed for the 7 hour drive to Saranac Lake.

We arrived Thursday night just in time for dinner. After a good night’s sleep, we worked Friday and Saturday. During these two work days, the team was able to move approximately 7 dump truck loads of brush, rock, and garbage out of the two backyards. The local community was so impressed that the CYC made the front page of the local newspaper Saturday morning, after just 1 day of work. Sunday we attended the CM&A church where we were staying for the worship service, then left for a short days hike up Mount Jo. Monday we headed back home, stopping briefly to visit the Wild Center. Each day also included a number of trust and initiative games designed for leadership development, and a devotional. We also had a few trips to the lake for swimming. All in all, the trip was a lot of fun, and a huge success.

As a Grandpa…

By Pete Andrews pres.

As I sat down, I started to ponder over all the projects and things our organization have been doing over the summer and I realized just how blessed I am to be involved with so many great young people. This summer I had my grand kids come out from Ca. This is not the first time they have came out for the summer. What a blessing they have

been ! With CYC shirt in hand, they traveled out, knowing just how hard we work in the summer and still they came to “Make a difference”. Elexis and Rick we all miss you very much ! (Especially grandpa)

I know that they check the web site from time to time and just wanted to let them know how much they mean to us. As grandpa, I am very proud of you two, and to your mom, you are doing alright. These kids are hard working and have great character. They are in our hearts and prayers.  Some of the projects they were involved in were… CKC and CYC …
